my car is making the seemingly famous "accessory tensioner rattle" noise at the usual idle speed of about 800 rpm.

looking closely at the rev counter - assuming it's reasonably accurate, I see that rattle dissappears at just below 900 RPM - with smooth steering too.

So.... Can Vag Com be used to up the idle speed to 900 rpm - and would it stay there even if the battery is disconnected at some future time to reset the ecu etc?

Well I stopped in at the local ford garage this morning - one look under the bonnet with a little listen and "have you had an alternator workshop warning?" yep - then it's the alternator sir, does the steering shudder on tick over - yep... definate alternator then.

Now where's that warranty direct number.. AGAIN

Warraty Direct allegedly wont allow their authorised repairers (nationwide autocentres) to fit genuine ford parts unless absolutely needed. They will be fitting a reco unit, which I dont have a problem with, and will remove the original for type/compatibility service exchange.

Is this C/A battery car likely to need a specific type of alternator anyone?

Conclusion - sweet!

They fitted a nice shiny new one from Ford after I pointed out that it may need to be a special one for the C/A battery type used. Total cost to me

Dave-G,

You are quite right, the alternator is the issue.

The actual fault is the pulley on the alternator. It is supposed to freewheel in one direction, if it seizes up, it causes the symptoms described. It is usually available as a separate part to the alternator at VW/AUDI/SEAT dealers. Don't know if Ford supply it separately but Audi alternators are generally

Hi LD, (yea i noted the nickname you were given too) and thanks for the help.

Thanks for being persistent enough to jump through the hurdles placed in the path of iffy new members. I see your posting page says you have made 42 posts... but I dont see that many in your profile>search members posts.

Me thinks this shows that mods can use their judgement to accelerate a newbie, BUT... What if you had'nt been so persistent and felt this was too much of a closed shop?

I'm not convinced this "newbie" filter should be so fine

I am doing what i can to upgrade Trainees, all has to be done manually and i have to work around the restrictions in place, so yes..the trainees i upgrade have their post counts adjusted aswell.

Have to admit..the new rules may put some peeps off..but the reasoning for it was sound.

Marian.

Dave-G,

I must admit, I did think about giving up when I hit a brick wall but, I don't like being beaten!

Thanks to mumof4, I hope her judgement is now proving her right. I don't disagree that restrictions should be in place to prevent unscrupulous members wasting time but, it can be a bit offputting. At one point I thought "they obviously don't want my help"?

Anyway, glad to help where possible,

LD :)

prevent unscrupulous members wasting time

LD ;)

I believe that the new regulations are to combat spammers and prevent spam bots flooding the site which appears to have attracted their notice in the recent months :)

Posted

Very true.....it was done in case a spammer/bot got through the validation , if this happened then without the current restrictions they could post all over the site....this way, if they got through they cant.It was also done to encourage new members to use the search facility as practically every problem has been covered before..(not all though).Certain times of the year= certain problems..like cold weather=Aux/booster heaters...wet weather=wiper problems.

There is a wealth of info on this site, and in the FAQs which Nik put together.

There are so many trainees on the site, and if they ask i will use my judgement as to whether to upgrade them or not.Just because i see all new members when they join the site, doesnt mean that i will remember them all :)

Posted

Point taken - thanks all.

I know some forums have a "handwritten" code for a human to reckognize and type into a box for validation which stops the bots.

I see the "ask a question that has been answered numerous times" as a way of introduction and requst for advice in one post. Lets face it - most people these days Google a problem they have - and hey presto - wow betcha by god there's an answer.... It how - and why I found it.

I guess we now spend time explaining how a trainee works instead of answering the question or posting a link to the FAQ's - except now a mod also has to go and upgrade them if they seem ok.

We were all new once,..I dont mind doing what i do on the forum, i enjoy it..Lets face it..how many of us really used the search engine on the forum when we first joined?..

There is a thread explaining how trainee works....but like most blokes who jump in before reading the manual, it doesnt get read.

I'll use this shameless excuse to show off my new avatar rather than start a whole thread about it - being as it's my thread I'm totally off topic on

IIRC it is an option on MK1 but I seem to remember a thread which decided it couldn't on mk2
